EMBARGOED UNTIL 00:01 MONDAY 30 JANUARY
English Heritage has secured the future of the Grade l Medieval Harmondsworth Barn in west London. Rescued by English Heritage from years of neglect and decay, the oak-framed medieval barn – dubbed by the late poet laureate and heritage campaigner Sir John Betjeman as the Cathedral of Middlesex – will be run by and for the local community. It will open to the public in April 2012.

Title                        –  “The Great Barn at Harmondsworth: Past, Present and Future”.

Speaker                 –  Dr Justine Bayley

Visitors are very welcome (suggested donation £3).

The talk will outline the history and construction of the Great Barn, which was built in 1426-7, a generation after the manor of Harmondsworth had been bought by William of Wyckham as part of the endowment for Winchester College. The Grade I listed building is almost unaltered and was one of the inspirations for the Gothic Revival in the 19th century. It has survived mainly because of its continued agricultural use, right up to the late 1970s.

Dr Justine Bayley has many years experience of research, administration, lecturing and teaching in archaeological and heritage science and its applications. I have worked mainly in the British Isles in the field of the archaeotechnology, but also have experience in north-western Europe.
