O2 Mobile Phone Scam

Dear Watch Member,

An O2 scam targeting customers in the United Kingdom is offering ridiculous discounts and phone plans in return for your one-time security codes.

At a time when the cost of living is rising in the United Kingdom – when many of us are worried about the looming energy price cap disaster, and finances are often stretched thin — the prospect of being the lucky customer eligible for a discount of 35% to 40% on your phone plan is an attractive one. At least, that’s what the callers on the end of the phone try to sell you.

The caller sounds delighted in informing you that you can take advantage of a substantial discount on your plan.

Even before they finish their pitch, you receive a text message which is a legitimate O2 communication — a one-time code that customers can use to access their accounts if they forget their password, for example.

This is how the scam works:

The cold caller asks if you want to take advantage of the discount.

At the same time, the scammer visits the O2 sign in page, types in your phone number, and asks for a one-time code to access your account In order to apply the discount. They only need the code they have just sent to your handset; if you hand over the code, they can then access your details.

Reports suggest the team has also impersonated Carphone Warehouse and Three, and are offering discounts, new phone contracts, and a 100% discount on phone charges. Worth keeping an eye out for, and as always, you should never hand over these details. If in doubt, cut the call and ring your service provider directly.

Remember, if someone calls you claiming to be from O2, they would never ask for one-time passcodes, passwords and PINs, or personal information like your bank details. So, make sure you check who they are by asking where they’re calling from. If you have any doubts, just give them a call to check.

New Parking Policy in Hatch End Morrisons Carpark

We have been made aware that from Monday 4th April 2022, Morrisons Hatch End will be introducing new parking restrictions.

Restrictions are as follows:
Maximum stay 2 hours during store opening times.

  • Mon – Sat 6am – 22:00 (timings taken from Morrisons website) and Sunday 10:00 – 16:00
    • Please Note – You do not need to show proof of using the store and you do not need to log your car registration upon entry – when parking there you will have a maximum of 2 hours during store opening times and if the car park is used for longer a £100 fine will be issued.
  • Outside of store opening times there is a maximum stay length of 10 minutes and a fine of £100 will be issued, if used for longer.

There is still free parking for up to 90 cars at Harrow Arts Centre’s Car Park.”

Save the last Bank Branch in Pinner

HSBC has announced that the Love Lane, Pinner branch will close its doors for the last time on 6 September 2022.

Barclays Bank is closing its branch in Pinner on 29 June so this will leave HSBC as the ONLY remaining bank we have in our vibrant community (one Building Society, the Nationwide will remain).

Now that HSBC has announced it also plans to close this year people are very concerned about how Pinner will be affected. Although many in our community do not visit bank branches many still do, particularly older residents, and businesses. In addition many local Pinner community groups will find it more difficult to manage their banking arrangements.

This petition asks the senior management of HSBC to reconsider its decision and to join the community in a dialogue to find a better solution. As a local councillor many residents have approached me with great ideas for HSBC to consider – these would enable HSBC to continue to provide a local service here in Pinner.

Catalytic Converter Marking Event – 30/03/2022

This for Harrow residents only who own the following makes of cars

• Toyota
• Honda
• Lexus
• BMW
• Volkswagen

 

In an effort to reduce catalytic converter thefts in the area, the respective Pinner, Pinner South and Hatch End Safer Neighbourhood Teams are holding a catalytic converter forensic marking event in the car park of Morrisons’, 299 Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, Pinner HA5 4QT on Wednesday 30th March 2022 between 8:00am –  11:00am.

This event is for Harrow residents ONLY. Forensic marking kits will only be installed on the five most targeted makes of vehicles for catalytic converter thefts:

  • Toyota
  • Hond
  • Lexus
  • BMW
  • Volkswagen

Working in partnership with HiQ Tyres & Autocare and Harrow Council, this service will be offered FREE of charge and will only require the simple completion of a registration form to ensure that the unique identifier of the forensic marker used is linked to you.

On the day, police will set up a stand where crime prevention advice and leaflets will be available.

To best avoid traffic congestion, all interested persons owning the above vehicle makes only, who wish to have their catalytic converters forensically marked, are to park their vehicle in an available parking bay at the event site in Morrisons’ car park.

Please be aware that there are only 75 forensic marking kits available and it is anticipated that they will be allocated extremely quickly. We apologise in advance to any attendees who do not manage to have their catalytic converter marked, but there will be future forensic marking where more kits will be available.

 

Beware – card scammers operating in the Chapel Lane car park!

PADCA, the charity which runs The Pinner Village Hall, has brought to our attention that scammers are targeting those who pay for parking in the Chapel Lane Car Park using their credit/debit card.  Scammers may appear like other motorists waiting to pay.  The machines are retaining credit/debit cards, whilst the scammers are attempting to obtain the PIN number.
